Hi, my name is Fr. Michael Cunningham and I’m a Redemptorist priest stationed at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brooklyn, New York. I have been ordained a priest for just over two years. I was ordained on May 4, 2019.

After my parents, John and Arlene, were married, they traveled east from Brooklyn to Long Island in the hopes of raising a family and raise a family they did. I am the youngest of seven children– three brothers and three sisters. I had a sense at an early age around my first Holy Communion that God was calling me to be a priest.

What I would describe as a “sense” would remain just that and would not become fully realized for quite some time. Instead, I believe God afforded me many incredible opportunities and life experiences, not to satiate an adventurous spirit but instead allow me to choose Him over them all.

I played competitive football for the first half of my life with the hopes of one day becoming a professional football player. I was an All-Conference Linebacker, Captain of the High School football team, and went on to play four years of college football. I was involved in bodybuilding, weightlifting, and week-long cycling and camping excursions from the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in California to Zion National Park’s rocky formations in Utah.

I studied pharmacy while attending university and became a pharmacist. I was a practicing pharmacist for sixteen years; it was an enjoyable and lucrative profession, and I made many friends, but it still wasn’t enough. On my best days, I would describe myself as happy yet unfulfilled.

I had the freedom to choose and do as I wished in life as we all do, but God still had my heart, and he wasn’t showing any signs of letting go. So one day, I knew I had to investigate at least the possibility of becoming a priest. I was fortunate enough to have grown up in a Redemptorist parish St. Martin of Tours, in Bethpage, New York, and found the priests there very down-to-earth, humble, and approachable. To me, they appeared happy but not only happy, but they also seemed fulfilled, and that is what I knew I also needed to be.

After a deliberate and concentrated discernment process, I entered the Redemptorist community in the Bronx, New York as a postulant and from there began to travel the world. A guy from Bethpage, who rarely traveled, began to travel to places I never expected to go, and at each location, I felt at home. I started my travels from the Bronx, then off to Mississippi, Canada, Boston, St. Lucia, and then back to Boston again. I then traveled to Bolivia and onto Brooklyn, where I currently reside.

Recently at OLPH Church in Brooklyn, we’ve established the OLPH Observatory, which is perched high above the streets of Brooklyn. It allows us to peer into the night sky to better look at the cosmos; it also gives us a glimpse into the one who created it. In the same way, we may examine the stitches of an old quilt left behind by our grandmother to understand better who she was and what she may have been thinking when she created it. So it is with God and the remnants he left behind in the universe, the planets and stars not unlike the stitches and swatches of a quilt.

A couple of things that I have learned, among many others, on my journey to the priesthood is that God is always good and never outdone. The road to the priesthood is like following a trail of bread crumbs to get to a place we’ve never been to before, but a place we know we need to be. We follow a trail left by one who went before us, the one that can’t be seen yet wants to be found. The saying goes, be careful who you give your heart to, which applies even more so when that person is God. When God captures your heart, he makes sure you experience his love in technicolor while all other loves are relegated to newsprint. In the words of Peter, one of the early followers of Jesus whose heart was captured by God’s love: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Hola, mi nombre es P. Michael Cunningham y yo soy un sacerdote redentorista destinado en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Soy ordenado sacerdote desde hace poco más de dos años. Fui ordenado sacerdote el 4 de mayo de 2019.

Después de que mis padres, John y Arlene, se casaron, viajaron al este de Brooklyn a Long Island con la esperanza de formar una familia y formar una familia que hicieron. Soy el menor de siete hermanos: tres hermanos y tres hermanas. A una edad temprana, alrededor de mi primera Comunión, tuve la sensación de que Dios me estaba llamando a ser sacerdote.

Lo que describiría como un “sentido” seguiría siendo solo eso y no se haría plenamente realizado durante bastante tiempo. En cambio, creo que Dios me brindó muchas oportunidades y experiencias de vida increíbles, no para saciar un espíritu aventurero, sino para permitirme elegirlo a Él sobre todos ellos.

Jugué fútbol competitivo durante la primera mitad de mi vida con la esperanza de convertirme algún día en jugador de fútbol profesional. Fui un apoyador de todas las conferencias, capitán del equipo de fútbol de la escuela secundaria y jugué cuatro años de fútbol americano universitario. Estuve involucrado en excursiones de culturismo, levantamiento de pesas y ciclismo y campamento de una semana desde la cordillera de Sierra Nevada en California hasta las formaciones rocosas del Parque Nacional Zion en Utah.

Estudié farmacia mientras asistía a la universidad y me convertí en farmacéutico. Fui farmacéutico en ejercicio durante dieciséis años; era una profesión placentera y lucrativa, e hice muchos amigos, pero aun así no fue suficiente. En mis mejores días, me describiría como feliz pero insatisfecho.

Tenía la libertad de elegir y hacer lo que quisiera en la vida, como lo hacemos todos, pero Dios todavía tenía mi corazón y no mostraba ningún signo de dejarlo ir. Así que un día supe que tenía que investigar al menos la posibilidad de convertirme en sacerdote. Tuve la suerte de haber crecido en la parroquia redentorista de St. Martin of Tours, en Bethpage, Nueva York, y encontré a los sacerdotes allí con los pies en la tierra, humildes y accesibles. Para mí, parecían felices, pero no solo felices, sino que también parecían realizados, y eso es lo que sabía que también necesitaba ser.

Luego de un deliberado y concentrado proceso de discernimiento, ingresé a la comunidad redentorista en el Bronx, Nueva York como postulante y desde allí comencé a viajar por el mundo. Un chico de Bethpage, que rara vez viajaba, comenzó a viajar a lugares a los que nunca esperé ir, y en cada lugar me sentí como en casa. Comencé mis viajes desde el Bronx, luego me fui a Mississippi, Canadá, Boston, Santa Lucía y luego de regreso a Boston nuevamente. Luego viajé a Bolivia y a Brooklyn, donde resido actualmente.

Recientemente, en la Iglesia OLPH en Brooklyn, establecimos el Observatorio OLPH, que se encuentra muy por encima de las calles de Brooklyn. Nos permite mirar hacia el cielo nocturno para observar mejor el cosmos; también nos da una idea de quién lo creó. De la misma manera, podemos examinar las puntadas de una colcha vieja que dejó nuestra abuela para comprender mejor quién era y qué estaba pensando cuando la creó. Así es con Dios y los remanentes que dejó en el universo, los planetas y las estrellas no muy diferentes de las puntadas y las muestras de una colcha.

Un par de cosas que he aprendido, entre muchas otras, en mi camino hacia el sacerdocio es que Dios siempre es bueno y nunca superado. El camino hacia el sacerdocio es como seguir un rastro de migas de pan para llegar a un lugar en el que nunca hemos estado antes, pero un lugar que sabemos que debemos estar. Seguimos un rastro dejado por uno que pasó antes que nosotros, el que no se ve todavía quiere ser encontrado. El refrán dice, ten cuidado a quién le das tu corazón, lo cual se aplica aún más cuando esa persona es Dios. Cuando Dios captura tu corazón, se asegura de que experimentes su amor en tecnicolor, mientras que todos los demás amores quedan relegados al papel de periódico. En palabras de Pedro, uno de los primeros seguidores de Jesús cuyo corazón fue capturado por el amor de Dios: “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna."
