Holy Ghost Catholic School in Houston recently received the 2022 Catholic Impact Award for its outreach and service to others at a special Mass with Cardinal Daniel DiNardo marking the start of the school year for teachers, principals and pastors.
“Whether the school community has served through corporal and spiritual works of mercy or shown incredible compassion and generosity to others through giving their time, talent and/or treasure, this award recognizes a school and its members for the impact they have on others and transforming the world by living out its Catholic mission,” explained Debra Haney, Catholic Schools Superintendent in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, who presented the award.
She recognized Debra Crowe, principal, for providing great leadership by hiring excellent staff to utilize their talents for the good of the students they serve and for their community, as well as finding a myriad of opportunities to share with others why they choose her school if they want the most out of a Catholic education.
She also noted that Fr. Bill Bueche, pastor of Holy Ghost Church, is proud to have her leadership, and unabashedly shares the joy he has for his Catholic school with anyone who will listen, increasing enrollment and the impact on their community.
“Fr. Bill takes a very personal approach to serving his community and frequently meets with parents to support them in their needs. He also served on Archdiocesan committees that support our C.R.O.S.S. Academies, and he recently was one of the keynote speakers at an in-service event discussing Catholic Social Teachings, which is lived out daily in his work at his parish and school,” she said.
The Catholic Impact Award also recognizes this school community for their efforts to feed the poor. Students and staff bring canned goods to Mass as their offering. The food is donated to the food pantry that the parish began during the pandemic to ensure that families in their area had enough food on their tables.
“Whether they are uniquely supporting parents, feeding the poor, or increasing enrollment in their Catholic school to transform the lives of families, we are recognizing Holy Ghost Catholic School, Fr. Bill Bueche and Deborah Crowe, as well as their entire faculty and staff. We know that it takes many hands to make our work impactful!” she said.
