Redemptorist alumni gathered to attend Bob Gonzalez’s funeral in San Antonio. Those present included Dave Biemer, Deacon Gerry Mechler, Bob Curry, Br. Charles Fucik, Fr José Chavez, Michael Trewitt, Charles Schraub, JoAnn Gonzales, Joann Hopkins, Ron Ziuraitis, Dr. Patrick Hopkins, Fr. Doug Fater, Patrick Lemelle and Rick Choffel.
Many current and former Redemptorists enjoyed seeing one another at the funeral and reception, and shared treasured memories of Bob. We particularly liked the way Fr. Doug Fater summarized the event:
The Indomitable Redemptorist Spirit, the family spirit of the Redemptorists is a flame that is never extinguished. Nowhere was this more obvious than at this gathering. It was vintage Redemptorist – singing the Salve Regina at the end of Mass, followed by food and fellowship.
It was great seeing the ageless and ever youthful Fr. Alton Carr – smiling and delighting guys whom he taught at Lacombe. Roc/Bob Curry flew in from Santa Fe, Rick Choffel from Dallas, Dave Biemer from Austin. Deacon Bill Hartman was present gently affirming everyone Br. Charlie Fucik with his pleasant presence.
It was good to see Charlie Schraub bantering with his Vietnamese student Luong Uong. Ron Ziuraitis coming up and telling Doug Fater: “The last time I saw you was Edgerton 1961! I always wondered how you were and where you might be.”
Fr. Don Willard, pastor at St. Gerard, was graciously attentive to everyone. It was good to see Fr. José Chavez presiding and preaching on the memorable experiences he shared with Bob And many others present.
Canonical distinctions may blur but they never sever Redemptorist relationships over a lifetime. “Once a Redemptorist always a Redemptorist” might define the Redemptorist spirit: whether priest, brother, husband, dad, or single.
That spirit burned warm and bright as we gathered to rejoice and give thanks for Bob Gonzales.
