The North American Theologate Community in San Antonio recently preached a mission to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Elmendorf, TX. Founded in 1896, the parish was served by Redemptorist missionaries for more than 40 years – from 1921 until 1962.
Fr. John Hecker was the first confrere to serve the parish and Fr. Gordon Travis was the last. Fr. Anthony Male, currently serving the parish, invited the community to preach a Triduum to begin the nine days of prayer in thanksgiving to God for the parish.
The Redemptorists preached on the novena theme, “With Gratitude, affirming our Faith.” Frater Ivan Dzhur (Canada) presided and Fr. José Chavez (Denver) preached on the theme of Gratitude the first evening.
Frater Steven Urban (Denver) presided and Frater Thien Hoang (Denver) preached on the theme of Affirmation during the second evening. The third evening, Fr. José presided at the Mass and Fr. Peter Hill preached on the theme of Faith.
We are grateful for the invitation to celebrate with the community and to be part of the great Redemptorist legacy which began over 100 years ago by our zealous and faithful confreres. It is truly an honor and a humbling experience for us to follow in the steps of the sons of St. Alphonsus.
